DPI - Applications

Why use DPI? DPI technology provides in-depth performance information that other systems cannot collect and analyze. Developing such a powerful technical platform opens the door to numerous applications constituting the framework for next generation networks.

  • E2E performance reporting: DPI shows it's full potential when it comes to network optimization and troubleshooting with its ability to drill-down the root of the problem in the underlying protocol layers up to the application layer.
  • Service Provisioning: DPI solutions can also identify the application layer's failed requests and wrong settings in every subscriber's mobile device to solve provisioning issues. The operator can then pro-actively push for the correct settings (Push OTA) resulting in a direct raise of service usage and ultimately creating additional revenue for the operator and increasing the subscribers' satisfaction or QoE.
  • Security reporting: Security is the root application field of DPI, which brings all its power to monitor the extent and the evolution of virus traffic in mobile networks. Subscribers infected by viruses frequently generate serious billing complaints to operators who are unable to investigate the reason of the billing problems without a proper solution; therefore operators are often very likely to lose their subscribers. DPI solutions can pro-actively identify the subscribers infected with virus and automatically take action to isolate or eliminate the threat.
  • VIP & corporate account management: DPI-based applications can also perform different kinds of analysis. A subscriber profile analysis stores all information related to the subscriber like the phone type, amount of MMS sent, type of content viewed, usage frequency, time of the day usage, identification of high potential customer, etc. This application can be used to promote new services to certain groups of subscribers, targeted advertisements, modify portal page content based on subscriber preferences, and propose new phones matching subscriber usage. This greatly increases subscriber intimacy and satisfaction while also increasing operator's revenue through well targeted content & promotion.
  • Business intelligence: Another good example of what DPI can achieve is the mobile phone analysis application which evaluates each phone types' performance, usage patterns of the phones, usage of phone ranges, evolution of phone penetration, usage frequency or phone provisioning problems, and provides a deep understanding about terminals used in the network and helps to define which phone types produce the most revenue to the operator and are the best to promote.
  • Marketing intelligence: The content provider analysis module analyzes the performance of each content provider, traffic and content usage evolution, quality monitoring per content provider, subscriber complaints against a content providers, etc. In turn, this helps operators to know the type of content subscribers like to use and from which provider as well as monitoring the performance of the providers.  Finally, this system can also be used to verify that content providers are maintaining their service levels and are not over-charging subscribers.
As we can see, the applications are as limitless as the depth of the collected information. This collected information can be widely used at several different levels in an organization. The above examples are just a sample of all the potential applications that can be based on the DPI technology.

As displayed through all the above examples, DPI based solutions are innovative because they transform the perception of the network from a high-maintenance, cost-center to that of an income-generating asset. By providing an efficient means for monitoring subscriber centers of interest and application behavior, the operator, unlike today, can do much more than just "fix problems". Thanks to this subscriber-centric service management center powered by DPI coupled with external applications, operators are finally regaining control of their networks, solving problems efficiently, and increasing their ARPU. Operators using Deep Packet Inspection for added revenue generation will indeed realize the vision of the future today.
